Hill Slide Committee UpdateVirgil Nelson, Chairperson of the Hill Slide Committee, reported that he was pleased to meet with Scott Hagemann, President of Selby Corporation, earlier this week, regarding the ongoing discussion of the possibility of the Hill Slide Committee facilitating an engineering study of the hill slide by the firm of Cotton and Shires. The intent of the committee has been to seek several alternative plans for reducing the risk of a major failure, Virgil reported. Initially, the prior management of Selby Corporation requested a “Hold Harmless” agreement from Cotton and Shires along with proof of insurance. A draft of that document was submitted. The management changeover early in 2012 required the process to begin again. At this time, the Attorney for the Selby Corporation is advising the new management to hold off on any third party involvements, indicating that if there is a study to be done, Selby Corporation should maintain control of that process.
Mr. Hagemann continues to be very interested in finding ways that the concerns of the Corporation can be met while at the same time guaranteeing that any entities committing to long-term solutions will have the capacity to follow through – not only with the implementation of the plans, but also the responsibility of r the liability and the ongoing maintenance of any of the projects being proposed.
He and the company are actively talking with the County and the City regarding a variety of possibilities, and will keep us informed as to how we might be involved in the drafting of those plans as well as in helping secure support from the City and the County for the implementation.
We also want to thank Mr. Hagemann and the Selby Corporation for their removal of the homeless encampments along the bottom of the hill and on the old Rocklite property, and their ongoing maintenance of the area. Their efforts are much appreciated, especially by the adjacent neighbors.
Also, re. committee representation at the meetings, Virgil reported that Mr. Neil Garber’s schedule no longer allows him to represent the committee at the regular meetings; and therefore, while Virgil Nelson will be the name brought forward to again be chair of the committee, the committee anticipates that the official representative in his absence will be Theresa Satterfield.
