The Westside Community Council teamed with City Corps and the Westside Community Development Corporation to sponsor a neighborhood cleanup on August 16, 2008. Thanks to Harv Champlin's efforts, the Rouse family allowed the use of their lot at the corner of Ventura Avenue and Kellogg Street. The event was extremely successful and all twelve roll-off dumpsters were filled in four hours. Residents were met at the gate by a volunteer who discussed recycling metals and green waste. Brochures were also handed out so any hazardous or electronic waste would be disposed of through the City's Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program. Over 1400 cubic feet of green waste was collected during the event and will be recycled instead of taking up space in our landfills. We also collected an entire dumpster full of recyclable metal. Thanks to the hardworking volunteers from City Corps and the Westside Community Council, there was plenty of help to keep things organized and moving throughout the event. Overall, this was a very successful event that helped fight neighborhood blight, and gave the volunteers a chance to make some new friends on the Westside. We truly appreciate everyone that participated and especially those that volunteered their time and backs to make this event happen. The Westside is a cleaner place because of your efforts!
