Mayor Christy Weir presented the Beautify Ventura Award to the Westside Community Council during the October 6, 2008 City Council meeting. Mayor Weir congratulated the Westside Community Council "for mobilizing committed volunteers to beautify Westside neighborhoods". She discussed the Westside Neighborhood Cleanup which is an event every year that fights the blight on the Westside by filling dumpters with recyclable green waste, metals, and also lots of trash. Mayor Weir also discussed how the Community Council had adopted the area along the bike path by the intersection of Stanley Avenue and Highway 33. This area was cleared of undergrowth and replanted with flowering bushes, plants, and ground cover. Volunteers from Westside meet every other month to do maintenance on the plants and clean up the area. Westside Community Council Board Members Michael O'Daniel, Ionia Kershaw, and Joanne Zivich accepted the award on behalf of the Westside Community Council. Michael O'Daniel thanked all the volunteers and supporters that helped make the projects happen. "Together we have all helped make the Westside a better place to live, work, and raise our families."
